What is Spirulina

Spirulina is a spiral-shaped blue-green algae that grows in alkaline lakes. It originated in tropical regions such as Mexico and Africa and consumed by the Aztecs in Mexico for centuries. It was discovered by French scientists in 1960, and further research revealed its high nutritional values, providing nutrients for the human body. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States even included spirulina as a nutritional supplement for astronauts in space. As a result, it gained public attention and has considered as one of the superfoods. It is widely used in nutritional supplements and health products, taken in tablet or powder form.

Spirulina is composed of 60-70% plant-based protein and contains various essential amino acids that human body cannot produce on its own and must obtain from food, making it particularly suitable for vegetarians. Additionally, spirulina contains vitamin B complex, minerals (including iron, magnesium, and calcium), gamma-linolenic acid, and beta-carotene. Beta-carotene can be converted into vitamin A in the body and is beneficial for eye and skin health. Spirulina is also rich in chlorophyll and phycocyanin, giving it a blue-green color. These compounds possess antioxidant properties, aiding in removing toxins and promoting immune system function.

As people live in modern lifestyle with tightly packed schedules, they tend to have frequent dining out. Imbalanced diets and dishes with heavy seasoning would easily lead to excessive food intake and toxins accumulation in body, thus affecting digestive system health.

Spirulina not only provides energy and nutrients, enhances the immune system, and improves digestive system function but also plays an important role in detoxification, reducing the harm caused by medications and heavy metals to the body.
