What is Amla?

Phyllanthus emblica, also known as Indian gooseberry or amla, is a traditional plant with both medicinal and edible properties, widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. Its fruit is rich in various bioactive components, including high concentrations of vitamin C (up to 600-800 mg/100 g), polyphenols (such as gallic acid, ellagic acid, and quercetin), flavonoids (such as rutin and kaempferol), and terpenoids. Additionally, amla contains multiple amino acids, minerals (such as calcium, phosphorus, and iron), and soluble fiber. These components endow amla with powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-regulating properties [1].

The initial taste of amla is sour and astringent, but it becomes sweet when chewed. However, not everyone can tolerate its rather pungent flavor. Incorporating it into health supplements makes it easier to absorb its nutrients and brings significant benefits to the body in multiple aspects.

In terms of uric acid management, amla’s antioxidant properties help inhibit the activity of xanthine oxidase, a key enzyme in the uric acid production process, thereby significantly reducing serum uric acid levels and protecting ankle joint cartilage [2]. For joint health, amla’s anti-inflammatory effects can suppress the activity of hyaluronidase and type II collagenase, reducing joint swelling and pain and providing protection for cartilage health [3].
