Cordyceps – The Rare and Treasured Health Elixir
Cordyceps sinensis was first discovered in Tibet 1,500 years ago. It is a complex of fungus and insect that grows in high-altitude and cold regions. Due to its extensive nutritional value and efficacy, it has always been regarded as a rare tonic fungus [1]. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is mainly used as a tonic to enhance immunity. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that it has powerful therapeutic effects on the respiratory system, liver and kidneys, cardiovascular system, and nervous system. Nucleosides are considered the main active components of Cordyceps sinensis, and the effective components of nucleosides include cordycepin and adenosine [1].
Adenosine helps resist viral invasion of the bronchi and lungs, maintaining respiratory system health [2]. It can also activate cytokines responsible for tissue repair and reconstruction. Additionally, it can dilate blood vessels, regulate heart rate, and improve myocardial function, thereby maintaining cardiovascular health [3]. Moreover, adenosine plays an important role in the operation of information transmission in the central and peripheral nervous systems [1].
Cordycepin is the first naturally occurring adenosine-like substance extracted from “Cordyceps”. It has antibacterial and antiviral properties, can activate the P53-P21 signaling pathway, and slow down pulmonary arterial hypertension, thereby helping to prevent breathing difficulties, asthma, dry cough or coughing [4].
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, many people have been affected by long-term COVID-19 after-effects, experiencing persistent coughing, nasal sensitivity, and brain fog. The cordyceps polysaccharides and adenosine in Cordyceps sinensis can regulate the function of immune cells, thereby achieving the effects of tonifying the kidneys and lungs, enhancing immunity, and alleviating coughing [1,5].
