LYCOPENE

What is Lycopene

Lycopene is a nutrient that the human body cannot synthesize on its own, and can only be obtained through diet. Lycopene is primarily found in red-colored fruits and vegetables, such as fresh tomatoes, watermelons, and red peppers. Compared to other vitamins, lycopene does not degrade when exposed to heat during cooking, but is actually more easily released. As a fat-soluble nutrient, lycopene is better absorbed by the body when cooked with oil. Therefore, consuming cooked tomatoes is an effective way to increase lycopene intake.

Lycopene is a carotenoid with potent antioxidant properties, being twice as potent as β-carotene and 10 times as potent as α-tocopherol (vitamin E). Lycopene can also inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, reducing the formation of melanin. Lycopene can protect cells from oxidative and UV damage, thus helping to maintain cardiovascular and skin health.

As men age, their levels of lycopene decrease, may increasing the risk of prostate issues. Lycopene can provide a protective effect, helping to enhance male physiological function, maintain prostate health, and potentially reduce the frequency of nighttime wake-up, thereby improving sleep quality. Lycopene consumption is suitable for men who are concerned about prostate health.
