Detailed Information

Joint Pain and Swelling
Joint pain and swelling may be caused by excessive uric acid production in the body. Uric acid crystals crystallize in the joints, causing inflammation and pain. Some people have no obvious symptoms and only discover their high uric acid levels during a blood test. In the initial stages, symptomatic individuals usually experience only one affected joint, most commonly the big toe, but also the knee, ankle, etc. The affected joint will suddenly become red, swollen, and extremely painful. In severe cases, the joint can become deformed, leading to loss of work ability. Excess uric acid crystals can also accumulate in other parts of the body, such as the kidneys and skin; the former can damage the kidneys with serious consequences.

Herbal Remedies for Pain Relief
Joint pain cannot be cured, but appropriate medication and dietary control can reduce the chance of recurrence. In traditional medicine, doctors recommend that people with joint pain eat Indian gooseberry and tart cherry to help relieve joint pain, swelling, and other symptoms.

– Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
Also known as Indian gooseberry, its Sanskrit name Amalaki means "nurse." Ayurvedic medicine, an ancient medical practice originating in India, often uses amla fruit as an ingredient in herbal remedies. Amla is renowned for its high vitamin C content; its juice contains 20 times more vitamin C than orange juice and 160 times more than apple juice. It also contains abundant polyphenols, potassium, calcium, and amino acids, making it extremely nutritious. Amla contains gallic acid, a polyphenol compound proven to benefit joint health. Amla combines various antioxidant nutrients to help alleviate symptoms of joint problems.

Uric acid crystals accumulate in joints, leading to swelling or other joint problems. Research suggests that joint problems may be related to the body producing excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). On the other hand, multiple studies using amla have found that components of its fruit can inhibit factors that promote oxidation. Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants in amla (Indicum oleraceum). More importantly, the vitamin C in amla is protected by other antioxidants, allowing it to maintain its antioxidant state for a long time, effectively inhibiting reactive oxygen species and helping to protect body cells.

– Sour Cherry (Tart Cherry)
Sour cherries are bright red fruits, and their bright red pigment is anthocyanin, a unique antioxidant found in plants. In addition, sour cherries contain various flavonoids, such as chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, and quercetin. Sour cherry anthocyanins have multiple effects and are therefore often recommended as a daily health supplement.

The benefits of anthocyanins to the body are believed to stem from their effective antioxidant properties, enzyme inhibition, free radical neutralization, and reduction of lipid peroxidation. It is known that elevated blood uric acid levels are associated with joint problems and their progression. One study found that eating sour cherries can help reduce blood uric acid levels and relieve joint pain.
